Shimano XTR 4-piston Enduro / Trail brakes are performance optimised Servo-Wave systems with full adjustability on the fly.
The BL-M9220 brake lever is designed with evolved ergonomics and the human hand in mind, delivering a powerful pull with consistent lever feel and modulation for ultimate control. A new closer pivot point follows the natural arc of your finger, while the 5-degree upswept lever blade and dialed reach adjust put the rider in a natural position to attack technical sections of trail. Redesigned Servo Wave optimises the power curve without friction, while new low viscosity mineral oil keeps power consistent over all temperatures and terrain.
High consistency and control make the BR-M9220 the strongest caliper in the M9200 family. New low viscosity oil keep the M9220 brakes’ bite point consistent in all trail and weather conditions, and new brake pads eliminate rattling noise caused by vibration. Increased power and consistency coupled with the peace of silence give riders pin-point control on rough trails.
Technology
Ergo Flow
Moves Like You Do
Going fast takes comfort. Great ergonomics provide that comfort. Ergonomic enhancement to Shimano mountain bike brakes provides an improved braking experience that matches the natural riding position of riders regardless of riding discipline.
Improved Ergonomics at Hand
Ergonomics evolved. Shimano has improved upon industry leading lever shape for the most natural-feeling XTR MTB hydraulic disc brake yet.
A Difference You Can Feel
The new closer pivot point follows the natural arc of the finger. Riding in the attack position has never felt more natural.
I-Spec EV
I-Spec EV creates a clean and action-optimised cockpit that provides greater focus and flexibility for a wider range of riders.
- Wider adjustment range allows riders of various styles, preferences and body styles to adjust to the optimal position
- Ergonomic design, quicker lever access, and light operation enhance rider comfort and concentration
With its wider adjustment range, I-Spec EV levers can be adjusted to the optimal position to match a wider range of riding styles (Enduro / XC / etc...), rider preferences and rider anatomies (Hand and arm alignment).
I-Spec EV increases brake lever rigidity by moving the brake clamp position inward to create an extra point of contact between the bar and the lever. This additional bracing drastically increases bike control and braking engagement while maintaining space between the clamp and support point for other handlebar accessories.
Servo Wave Action
When you pull a Servo Wave brake lever, initial pad travel is fast, so little lever movement is needed to bring the pads into contact with the rotor. The power multiplication factor then increases rapidly at the pad-to-rim contact so more of the lever stroke is used to apply greater braking power with improved control.
Ice Technologies
Shimano Ice Technologies components deliver more consistent braking performance by reducing heat buildup in the system. This helps prevent brake fade, which can happen when a rider applies the brakes repeatedly and strongly over a short period of time, such as when descending a long, steep hill.
Shimano has adopted Ice Technologies disc brake rotor and Ice Technologies pad to realize the cooling technology for consistent performance. The clad disc brake rotor blade, which has a 3 layer-sandwich structure of stainless steel, aluminium and stainless steel, provides better radiation performance. Also, the radiation fin has been adopted for the pad. Moreover, the clad disc brake rotor blade and the radiator fin provide long pad life, less noise, less fade and lightweight.
Clad rotors as well as Clad Brake pads significantly reduce heat build-up in the brake system. This in turn reduces fading, which ensures consistent high performance even on long downhill stretches, It also results in a longer pad life and substantially quieter braking.
Four Piston
Disc brake system with the dual diameter opposed-piston caliper design has differently sized pistons in front and in the rear. The system adopts a power transfer system in which the disc brake rotor is pressed by the smaller sized piston at the entrance of the disc brake rotor intake and also by the more powerful larger sized piston at the back. This prevents the wobbling motion of the disc brake rotor and reduces noises significantly.
The 4-piston caliper also allows a wider contact area for the disc brake rotor while keeping the size compact, and the efficient location of pads is adjusted as necessary to stabilize the pressure. In combination use with the Servo Wave lever it provides an incredible 50% more stopping power than the previous model. The advanced Saint / Zee disc brake system, which adjusts to accommodate the different braking styles of different riders, offers stable braking power and excellent modulation.
- Dual diameter opposed 4-piston caliper design
- Offers stable braking power and excellent modulation, and disturbs the wobbling motion of the rotor and reduces noises significantly
